Zanaflex abuse: How to draw a line between actual need and abuse

Substance abuse and dependence are becoming a common cause for worry in the United States. This is extremely serious as abuse of prescription medication can cause acute problems in individuals. Doctors are aware of the most commonly abused drugs like benzodiazepines and narcotics and avoid prescribing them to patients. There are some cases wherein some unusual drugs are also abused by patients. These drugs include skeletal muscle relaxants and pain killers. Many use muscle relaxants excessively or on chronic basis on account of their sedative properties. It is found out that about 2% of American adults use muscle relaxants in a highly toxic fashion.

Why does this happen? Does not everyone know the difference between the actual need and abuse? Why do muscle relaxants hook patients to use them frequently?

Muscle Relaxants – History of abuse:
The mechanism of how a muscle relaxant works is not known to many. But studies reveal that they work by depressing the polysynaptic reflexes in a person. Because of this, they cause dizziness and drowsiness in the patient, resulting in a relaxed and pain-free state of being. Sometimes, high doses of muscle relaxants can cause a sense of euphoria, mood enhancement and pleasant mis-perceptions. This is why many people misuse muscle relaxants and create self-induced hallucinations. Muscle relaxants were found to be abused by people when in 1996, a hospital lost a few patients on account of drug abuse. Another case of 5 deaths caused the FDA and other organizations to look into the issue and ban as many as 20 muscle relaxants so far.

Zanaflex abuse: Zanaflex is a short-acting, commonly prescribed muscle relaxant for skeletal muscle spasms and muscular pain. It works by blocking the nerve impulses and pain sensations from being sent to the brain. A temporarily relaxing muscle toner, Zanaflex is used in the treatment of spasticity. Since the mechanism of Zanaflex gives instant relief from muscular pain, many people tend to use it frequently, beyond the prescribed level of usage. Seven to eight tablets of Zanaflex at a time can cause serious problems which include complete dizziness and even life-threatening conditions.

Below are a few tips on how to get out of Zanaflex addiction:

1. Know the odds:
Know about all the ills of Zanaflex abuse. Overdose of Zanaflex can cause hallucinations, drowsiness, confusion, slow heart rate, shallow breathing, lightheadedness, fainting and even coma. When you come to know about the odds involved, you will never venture into drug abuse.

2. Speak to your doctor: There is no need to keep your addiction habit to yourself. If you are a Zanaflex addict, talk to your doctor. Remember it is very important to recover than seek temporary pleasure from the drug. When you are on the recovery road, follow your doctor’s instructions as strictly as possible.

3. Check for side effects: Zanaflex causes a lot of side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, low blood pressure, heartburn, sleepiness, anxiety, sweating, back pain and blurred vision. Sometimes strange speech patterns and abnormal liver functions also happen due to Zanaflex usage. If you are addicted to Zanaflex, you have probably warmed up to the drug’s side effects. If you have come to such a stage, better to consult your doctor on this.

When you are trying to get out of Zanaflex addiction, you need to avoid certain drugs to reduce drug interactions. You can get the list of drugs you need to avoid from your doctor. Since muscle relaxants are not commonly-abused drugs, you may not find much information or support groups to get out of them. This is why you need to work closely with your doctor on the road to recovery.

PLEASE NOTE : OnlinePharmacyForum.Com recommends personal consultation with a doctor. The dangers in buying medications online include the online drugstore selling counterfeit, expired or contaminated medications to you. Sometimes the drugs that you receive may have been prepared by unethical means or using unusual substances. This is why you should buy drugs from a licensed and FDA-approved pharmacy; after consulting with a doctor and getting a valid prescription.
