The purple pill that puts your stomach acid to rest: Nexium for acid reflux

The human body is a complex mechanism. It does not always work the way we want it to. Often there are times when the body responds to even the slightest of discomforts in the most serious manner. Both overeating and under-eating can be problematic. More troublesome can be the increase of stomach acid or acid reflux disorder.

GERD: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is disorder caused by the rise of stomach acid in the esophagus. When the lower esophageal sphincter does not open or close properly during digestion, the acid in the stomach spills over the esophageal lining, causing acid reflux or GERD. It is said that over 19 million people in the U.S. may suffer from GERD and about 4.6 million doctor visits each year are about discussion of GERD symptoms.

Nexium in treatment of GERD: Nexium or esomeprazole magnesium is a great drug for treatment of GERD. Recently, the FDA has approved its efficacy in the treatment of GERD in children aged 1 to 11. Since the drug is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), it decreases the acid produced by the stomach. Nexium also heals the erosion caused by the acid in the esophageal lining, resulting in a complete cure for GERD.
How does Nexium work? Nexium works by blocking stomach acid production in the stomach through its Proton Pump Inhibitor properties. By this, Nexium eliminates any possibility of stomach acid back ups from rising up to the esophagus. Decreasing stomach acid can relieve GERD patients of problems like heartburn, swallowing difficulties, cough, indigestion issues, acid reflux and sleep problems. Nexium is used in the treatment of the hyperacidity of the stomach, gastric ulcers, esophagitis healing and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The drug is sometimes prescribed for treatment of H. pylori infection. Since GERD can develop into serious problems like painful bleeding, ulcers, corrosion in the esophagus, asthma, chest pains and chronic cough if left untreated, it is better to treat GERD at the onset itself.

Nexium side effects: Nexium is not without side effects. Some of the side effects include hot flashes, dyspepsia, constipation, gas, headache, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth and stomach pain. Hives or swelling in the face or lips or tongue or throat can indicate serious side effects which require immediate medical attention.

Nexium Dosage: Nexium needs to be taken as directed by the physician. GERD therapy usually takes about eight weeks. If your therapy is more than that, ask your doctor why it is so and seek adequate medical counsel with regard to the intake of the drug. Nexium can be taken one hour before meal or at bedtime or before a snack. Taking the pill with a lot of water helps reduce the effectiveness of the stomach acid quickly.

Things to note while taking Nexium: If you are intent on curing GERD in your child or for yourself or in any of your family members, you need to follow up on the symptoms. Keep a diary of symptoms for two or three weeks, take count of the number of hours the acid stayed in your esophageal region, include details on what over the counter drugs failed to help you and make a note of all the kinds of other bodily changes you went through during the GERD period. All these will help your doctor detect the intensity of your acid reflux condition and treat you in the appropriate manner.

PLEASE NOTE : OnlinePharmacyForum.Com recommends personal consultation with a doctor. The dangers in buying medications online include the online drugstore selling counterfeit, expired or contaminated medications to you. Sometimes the drugs that you receive may have been prepared by unethical means or using unusual substances. This is why you should buy drugs from a licensed and FDA-approved pharmacy; after consulting with a doctor and getting a valid prescription.
