No periods, no acne: Yasmin in contraception and acne treatment

Birth control pills have moved away from the once-stereotypical roles of preventing pregnancy to other uses. Yes, doctors do not anymore prescribe the pills to prevent pregnancy alone, they are used in regulating menstruation, treating acne and for curing symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) like anxiety, depression, irritability, lack of concentration, sleep or appetite changes, breast tenderness and weight gain. There are several types of birth control pills – low dose pills, mini-pills and combination pills. Yasmin is a low dose, combination contraceptive pill which works by stopping ovulation in the body.

Yasmin – How does it work? Yasmin works like any other birth control pill. The drug, a combination pill, has two hormones – drospirenone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). The synthetic hormones in the pill work by controlling natural hormones in the body that induce ovulation. The pill stops ovulation, causes changes in the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from entering the uterus and then, does changes in the endometrium to make it difficult for the sperm to implant the egg.

Yasmin in birth control: Yasmin is one of the most effective birth control pills used in the United States. Though the drug comes with a few side effects, the combination of drospirenone with estrogen is effective by 99% in preventing pregnancy. There are two types of packs in Yasmin – 21-day pack and 28-day pack. The 21-day pack has to be taken one pill a day for 21 days, and then left out with no pill for last 7 days of the 28-day cycle. The 28-day pack has to taken one pill a day for 28 days. In the 28 day pill pack, 21 are active pills, while the remaining 7 are placebo or reminder pills. The drug can be taken immediately or on the fifth day after the onset of your period. The pills should be taken at the same time each day and it is better to take them after meal or at bedtime. Since Yasmin is said to be effective only after the first 7 days of intake, it is better if you try out other contraceptive options for the first 10 days of intake of the drug.

Yasmin in acne treatment: Birth control pills like Yasmin are nowadays used in the treatment of acne. Yasmin, especially, is used in curing mild to moderate acne by reversing the androgen effects of the body. Androgen is a major cause for skin oil secretion and it is these skin oils that keep acne from recurring on the face. Yasmin reduces excessive production of skin oil and thereby, prevents formation of clogged pores and acne.

Yasmin – side effects and limitations: Though Yasmin is hailed as a wonder pill, it does come with some serious side effects that can prove to be fatal to any woman. Like every pill, Yasmin increases risk of blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, kidney and liver disorders. Anyone who has had a history of heart ailments, liver or kidney disorders, unusual vaginal bleeding, jaundice, adrenal gland disorder, high blood pressure, liver cancer, obesity, gallbladder disease, diabetes, epilepsy, depression or seizures should not take Yasmin without consultation with a doctor. Yasmin can cause birth defects in the unborn baby and hence should be avoided by all means if you are pregnant or suspect yourself to be pregnant. Some of the serious side effects of the drug are abdominal cramps, acne, breakthrough bleeding, breast pain, breast tenderness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, nervousness and back pain.

PLEASE NOTE : OnlinePharmacyForum.Com recommends personal consultation with a doctor. The dangers in buying medications online include the online drugstore selling counterfeit, expired or contaminated medications to you. Sometimes the drugs that you receive may have been prepared by unethical means or using unusual substances. This is why you should buy drugs from a licensed and FDA-approved pharmacy; after consulting with a doctor and getting a valid prescription.
