Gris-Peg and fungal infections: 10 important things you need to know

Many people in the United States are affected fungus infections every year. Athlete’s foot, barber’s itch, jock itch, ringworms in body, scalp, nails and hair – are a few of the most common fungal infections that occur in people. Gris-Peg or Griseofulvin is an anti-fungal medication that treats such infections and steers clear of all possible fungus in the affected areas. It also guards the body against further fungal infections.

Like every other drug, Gris-Peg has both benefits and side effects. Here are a few important things you need to know about Gris-Peg:

1. Don’t stop if your symptoms disappear: Symptoms of your fungus may disappear few days after you start taking the drug. However, that is not a signal for you to stop taking the drug. You should continue with the drug and complete your full course even if your infections disappear. Only then the fungi will be thoroughly annihilated.

2. Seek medical advice: You need to seek medical advice if you have cases of porphyria, liver disorders or have allergic reactions to the drug. Do not take the drug if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

3. Missed dose: Missed doses should be taken immediately. If it is almost time for the next dose, evenly space out the doses at different times of the day.

4. Overdose: Emergency medical attention is a must if you are a victim of overdose. Some of Griseofulvin’s overdose symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, headache, numbness, tingling, nervousness and confusion.

5. Dosage nuances – avoid sunlight: When you take Gris-Peg, you need to avoid sunlight to the maximum extent possible. As Griseofulvin increases sensitivity to sunlight, you may end up feeling a burning sensation all over your body. If you need to go out in the sun, use sunscreen lotions or clothing that reduces exposure to the sun.

6. Dosage nuances – avoid alcohol: Alcohol and Griseofulvin do not go together. Alcohol may increase heart beat and cause a fast flushing of Gris-Peg. This is why it is always better to avoid heavy alcohol consumption while on Gris-Peg medication.

7. Gris-Peg dosing instructions: Follow the directions of your doctor. If you do not understand any of the label instructions, ask guidance from your pharmacist or doctor. Ideal dosage for Gris-Peg would be one dose + 8 ounces (or one full glass) of water. Take the drug with a heavy-fat meal in order to increase the drug’s absorption rate in the body. Take the dosage in the right measure. Use a measuring cup or spoon to ensure that you consume the drug in the right measure.

8. Gris-Peg side effects – allergic reactions: Gris-Peg can evoke allergic reactions in a patient. This may include serious conditions like difficulty in breathing, swelling of lips, tongue and face, swelling of hives, closing of throat and others.

9. Gris-Peg side effects – less severe reactions: The drug can cause several less critical reactions in the body. This includes white patches in mouth due to yeast infection, nausea, vomiting, confusion, numbness, tingling in your hands and feet, menstrual problems, cramps etc.

10. Gris-Peg common side effects: Stomach upsets and diarrhea are two of the most common side effects caused by the drug. These side effects persist even after disappearance of the infections or after completion of the course of the drug.
